Center and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Present “MIX
‘05” on May 19

Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center (A&PI Wellness
Center), in association with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts,
will present MIX '05 ( A&PI Wellness Center's 8 th Annual
Community Awards and Silent Auction) on Thursday evening,
May 19. Commemorating its 18 years of sexual health and HIV/AIDS
services, MIX '05 runs from 6:45 to 10 p.m., and takes place
at The Forum at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 701 Mission
Street (at 3 rd ), San Francisco. Actors Amy Hill and Alec
Mapa will emcee MIX ‘05. “We are thrilled to commemorate
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with an event that affirms
our communities' ability to take on HIV-related stigma, while
lauding the essential contributions of our community partners,”
said John Manzon-Santos, Executive Director of Asian &
Pacific Islander Wellness Center.
MIX '05 tickets are $50, which includes liqueur tastings
by Bacardi Rum & Flavors, Pravda Vodka, Rémy Martin,
Piper Hiedseck Champagne, and Hpnotiq; gourmet food from Koi
Palace; and special dance performances by Mini-Shock and Clark
Bolivar, Jr. and his hula halau. An awards program will honor
Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis, Horizons Foundation,
Tom Waddell Health Center, Comcast Cable, and CBS5/UPN Bay
Area. Individual and institutional sponsorships begin at $100.
Funds raised will benefit A&PI Wellness Center's multi-lingual
services for Asians and Pacific Islanders living with and
at risk for HIV/AIDS, and their families. For event information,

May 19 is also the First Annual National Asian & Pacific
Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day commemorated with concurrent
events in six other U.S. cities: Boston, Chicago, Honolulu,
Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC. Prior to MIX '05
in San Francisco, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the same venue, A&PI
Wellness Center will sponsor a free program open to the general
public featuring a video presentation with highlights from
the story of The Nakatani Family, and an panel of experts
featuring Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis, actor Russell
Wong, award-winning journalist Helen Zia, HIV+ transgender
activist the Hon. Cecilia Chung and family members, and a
Thai Buddhist Monk. Former NFL Lineman Esera Tuaolo and actors
Amy Hill and Alec Mapa will also appear. Dozens of quilt panels
from the Names Project honoring A&PIs who have died of
AIDS and HIV-related illness will be on display. The Program
will be ASL interpreted. This Awareness Day Program launches
The
Banyan Tree Project, a groundbreaking, year-round national
campaign to fight HIV-related discrimination and stigma in
A&PI communities.
A&PI Wellness Center educates, supports, empowers, and
advocates for A&PI communities, particularly A&PIs
living with or at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1987 as a
grassroots response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in communities
of color, it is the oldest nonprofit organization in North
America targeting A&PI communities around sexual health
and HIV/AIDS services.
