Honorees 2001

Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center's a thursday in may... 2001 Gala was held on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

The event featured an array of hors d'oeuvres, an open bar, silent auction and an awards program. After the awards presentation, singer/songwriter Fatima performed songs from her new album “Pleasure to Love You” while guests enjoyed desserts and a Kahlua and coffee.

A&PIWC presented its annual awards to community organizations and individuals who have been instrumental in supporting our mission.

CAPS has spearheaded research to help focus attention on the needs and concerns of Asians and Pacific Islanders and other communities of color. CAPS has produced such groundbreaking HIV prevention studies as an evaluation of community-level interventions among young A&PI gay men, an investigation of HIV risk and protective behavior among Transgenders of color, an examination of drug use among Asian Americans in San Francisco, and the development of model prevention programs targeting HIV positive individuals. CAPS international research has examined HIV prevention efforts in Japan, South China, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, and Thailand.

Ed Tang is a philanthropist who has demonstrated leadership and vision by creating and endowing the Queer Asian & Pacific Islander Pride Scholarship that distributes $16,000 a year to Bay Area queer youth 22 and under. A Chinese immigrant, successful businessman, father and gay man, Ed established the Pride Scholarship to help Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQQ youth achieve educational pursuits and dreams, proudly and without shame.

Asian/Pacific Lesbian Bisexual Network (APLBN) is the oldest and most sustained Asian and Pacific Islander lesbian women’s organization in the country. APLBN has played an important leadership role nationally through conferences, advocacy, and community mobilization - from participating in the 1997 March on Washington, to organizing five national retreats, Activist Institutes and most recently The Asian Pacific Lesbian Bisexual Queer Transgender Women’s Forum with members of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on November 13, 2000.
