A total of 154 Asian/Pacific Islander AIDS cases were
reported in Alameda County since the beginning of the epidemic
in 1980 through 2000.
Annual Asian/Pacific Islander AIDS Cases
The number of annual cases increased through the 80’s
peaking in 1996 and 1997 at 18 cases. Since then, it has decreased
each year, reaching 8 in 2000.

Annual Case Rate Trend
The case rate increased annually reaching a high in 1996
at 7.3 per 100,000, and has since decreased to 2.7 per 100,000
in 2000 (0.9 per 100,000 among Asian/Pacific Islanders in
California). Asian/Pacific Islanders have had the lowest
annual case rates as compared to African Americans, Whites,
and Latinos in Alameda County
Percentage of Cases
Overall, Asian/Pacific Islanders comprise 3% of the 5,960 AIDS
cases reported to Alameda County from 1980 to 2000. This is similar
to the percent of AIDS cases among Asian/Pacific Islanders in the State
(2%), and in the nation (1%).
Annual Percent Trend
In Alameda County the percent of AIDS cases among Asian/Pacific
Islanders has remained steady at about 2-3% of all cases,
peaking to 5.5% of all cases in 1997
and is 4% of AIDS cases in 2000.
Age
Ninety percent of Asian/Pacific Islanders diagnosed with
ages of 20 and 49 years at the time of diagnosis

*The number of annual AIDS cases in all of
the U.S. has been decreasing since the early 90s. The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention have largely attributed
this decrease to widespread use of antiretroviral therapies
that slow down progression from HIV infection to AIDS diagnosis.
Gender
More than four out of five Asian/Pacific Islanders diagnosed
with AIDS are male (82%, 127 cases); females account for
18% (27 cases).
Exposure
Overall, men having sex with men (MSM) accounts for 56% (86)
of Asian/Pacific Islander AIDS cases; heterosexual contact
accounts for 15% (23 cases); injection drug use (IDU) accounts
for 6% (10 cases); cases among persons that are both MSM
and IDU accounts for 4% (6 cases); while individuals who
were exposed by transfusions or treatments for blood disorders
made up 9% (14 cases).
Exposure Highlights
The percent of AIDS cases associated with MSM behavior has
decreased since the beginning of the epidemic.
The percent of AIDS cases associated with heterosexual
contact has increased among Asian/Pacific Islanders.
The predominant exposure category for Asian/Pacific Islander
males was MSM, while Asian/Pacific Islander females most
often acquired the disease through heterosexual transmission.
Cities of Residence
Asian/Pacific Islanders comprise 8% of AIDS cases reported
from Albany, 7% of the cases from Union City and 6% of the
cases from each Alameda and Fremont. In the remaining cities,
Asian/Pacific Islanders make up 4% or fewer of the AIDS cases.

Geographic Distribution
59% of all Asian/Pacific Islander AIDS cases resided in North
County at time of diagnosis, and 40% in Oakland specifically.
Deaths
A total of 73 AIDS-related deaths have occurred among Asian/Pacific
Islanders in Alameda County. The case fatality rate is 47%,
similar (due to small numbers) to that for Asian/Pacific
Islanders nationally (53%) and the State (55%).
Case Fatality Rate by Race/Ethnicity
In Alameda County from 1996 to 2000, the AIDS case fatality
rate among Asian/Pacific Islanders is 20%. BecauseAsian/Pacific
Islander counts are small, the case fatality rate is statistically
similar to that among African Americans (19%) and Latinos
(17%) and Whites (13%).
Persons living with AIDS (PLWA)
A total of 73 AIDS-related deaths have occurred among Asian/Pacific
Islanders in Alameda County. The case fatality rate is 47%,
similar (due to small numbers) to that for Asian/Pacific
Islanders nationally (53%) and the State (55%).
PLWA Demographics
20% (16) were female, 80% (65) were male.
There were no pediatric Asian/Pacific Islanders living
with an AIDS diagnosis.
4% (3) were adolescent cases, 18% (15) are in their 20’s,
70% (57) were diagnosed in their 30’s and 40’s,
and 7% (6) were diagnosed in their 50’s or later.
49% (40) are associated with MSM behavior, 22% (18) with
heterosexual contact, and 7% (6) by injection drug use.
