FLARE targets Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties, located
in the south and east parts of the Bay Area. In this tri-county
area, Asian & Pacific Islanders (A&PIs) represent 28% or
1.09 million of the approximately 3.5 million total population.
A&PIs thus represent the largest minority community in Alameda,
San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, outnumbering Latinos, who constitute
the largest minority community in most other counties of the Bay
Area. 67% of all A&PIs in the nine county Bay Area live in
Alameda, San Mateo or Santa Clara counties.
General Demographics in the Tri-County Area
A&PIs are the fastest growing and largest racial group in
the SF Bay Area, increasing by over 46% from 1990 to 2000, which
far outpaces the 8 and 13% rates of growth of the total SF and
total US populations, respectively. Additional demographic data
reveals the complexity of the growth and size of A&PI communities.
In the Bay Area, for example, the Asian Indian population increased
by 197% (8). The size and percent distribution of diverse racial
groups in the tri-county area are displayed in the following table
to provide context to the second table, which illustrates ethnic
heterogeneity within the A&PI racial category. The multiplicity
of distinct cultural and linguistic groups is implied.
