Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center's mission is
to educate, support, empower, and advocate for Asian and
Pacific Islander (A&PI) communities - particularly A&PIs
living with or at-risk for HIV/AIDS. We are the oldest and
largest nonprofit in North America focusing on sexual health
and HIV in A&PI communities. Founded in 1987 as an all-volunteer,
community-based response to the AIDS crisis in communities
of color, we are based in San Francisco’s Tenderloin
neighborhood with satellites in Alameda and San Mateo Counties,
operate local, regional, statewide, and national programming,
and collaborate with grassroots activists throughout the
Asia Pacific Region. All of our work is aligned to fight
HIV-related stigma, and focuses on A&PIs who experience
the most extreme forms of discrimination and have the least
access to quality services. The agency’s greatest assets – our
Board of Directors, staff and volunteers – reflect
the talents and diversity of the communities we serve; as
a cornerstone of our cultural competency, our staff speaks

Position Description:
Community Based Research Team Leader(CBR-TL) position is
a member of the National Capacity Building Assistance (CBA)
Program and leads community based health research within
the program related to program interventions, social marketing
interventions and provides overall program evaluation support
to the National CBA program. The position will
also support planning of research activities within the
department. The CBR-TL position will report to the
National Program Manager. Some weekend work and travel
required. This position is housed in the Community
Development & External Affairs Department.
Major Responsibilities:
- Provide technical expertise and assistance to community-based
organizations to strengthen their prevention programs serving
A&PIs on scientific program effectiveness, which includes
consultation, training, and technology transfer of science
to practice
- Lead evaluation projects to assess program interventions
for their effectiveness on culturally competent health
promotion and care for A&PIs
- Documentation projects include: program best practices,
program models, cultural competence guides and case studies
for publication
- Formative research projects on evaluation of national
social marketing campaigns
- Provide technical support to
the National HIV capacity building program in the US and
Pacific Island Jurisdictions
- Support planning of research
activities in the department
- Represent the agency at public
events and conferences
- Support related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in social sciences or related fields. Alternately
a master’s degree in public health, epidemiology,
social sciences or related field with 5 years experience
conducting research (formative research, monitoring and
evaluation) in health preferably HIV/AIDS.
- 2 years of proven experience working on HIV or health
related issues
- 2 years of experience working with Asian & Pacific
Islanders or other communities of color
- 1 year track record of working with community-based organizations
- Sensitivity to non-profit culture and government funding
- Ability to work effectively with diverse organizations,
groups and individuals serving A&PI communities
- Strong interpersonal communication and writing skills,
with sensitivity to appropriate delivery depending on target
and audience
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
Essential Mental Functions:
Research, examine, and
understand data and have the ability to think and communicate
effectively and creatively.
Essential Physical Functions:
Occasional to frequent
travels to off-site locations such as bars, clubs, street
alleys, etc, environments can be unpleasant with high noise
levels, violent or aggressive people and exposure to extreme
heat or cold. Hours of work are beyond regular work schedule.
Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects
up to 30 lbs.
