Wellness Center Elects Galen Leung to Board of Directors,
Fatima Angeles Vice-Chair of Governance
San Francisco (April 19, 2005) – Asian & Pacific
Islander Wellness Center (A&PI Wellness Center) today
announced that Galen Leung has joined its Board of Directors
and Fatima Angeles has been elected Vice-Chair of Governance.
Leung, who is Chinese, is Director of the Office of Contracts
Management and Compliance at the San Francisco Department
of Public Health, and has worked and volunteered extensively
with HIV/AIDS, A&PI, and LGBT (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender)
organizations.
Angeles, a Filipina, is Program Director at The California
Wellness Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated
to improving the health of the people of California by making
grants for health promotion, wellness education and disease
prevention. Angeles has been a member of A&PI Wellness
Center 's Board of Directors since 2003.
“We are pleased about adding Galen's passion and expertise
to the board, and expanding Fatima 's leadership role,”
said Jan Masaoka, Chair of A&PI Wellness Center's Board
of Directors and executive director of CompassPoint Nonprofit
Services. “We're grateful that A&PI leaders of this
caliber are willing to step up to the challenges of meeting
ever-expanding needs for our services, while at the same time
help us to kick-off a national effort to fight HIV-related
discrimination and stigma in A&PI communities.”
This effort, The Banyan Tree Project (www.banyantreeproject.org),
will be launched on Thursday, May 19 with The First Annual
National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

A&PI Wellness Center educates, supports, empowers, and
advocates for A&PI communities, particularly A&PIs
living with or at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1987 as a
grassroots response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in communities
of color, it is the oldest nonprofit organization in North
America focusing on A&PI communities around sexual health
and HIV/AIDS services.
