A&PI Wellness center Comments on akira jackson
OFFICIAL STATEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO — All of us at Asian & Pacific Islander
Wellness Center are deeply saddened by a recent tragedy affecting
one of our staff members. On Monday, November 8, 2010, Asian
& Pacific Islander Wellness Center staff member Akira
Jackson was charged in the fatal stabbing of a Walnut Creek
man. She is currently being held at County Jail in Martinez.
Police indicate the incident may be the result of domestic
violence. Domestic violence is a widespread problem affecting
many couples and communities, demanding more attention and
prevention.
Our hearts go out to the deceased, the families involved,
the community and Akira. Our experience of Akira's work is
that it has always been highly professional, demonstrating
a commitment to the community. We had no reason to believe
she should not work with our community.
Until more is known, we ask that you respect Akira's privacy
and contribution to the community by refraining from speculating
about her case. We will strive to do the same.
We know this is a difficult time for our TRANS:THRIVE and
T-LISH clients, as it is for all A&PI Wellness Center
staff. We extend our unwavering support to the entire transgender
community. Our doors are open to anyone needing a safe space
to process all the emotions this shocking and painful news
may trigger. To that end, we will also provide group counseling
and support sessions for our clients.
